Maldives. About.

A chain of the most attractive atolls, spread over the Indian Ocean, contains amazing tropical islands, whose coral structures are separated by light-blue lagoons, that turned Maldives into a magic place for holidays. In the middle of the island chain there’s the capital island, Male, and all the Maldivian atolls make part of Laccadives-Chagos Ridge archipelago. Ring-shaped coral reefs “faru” protect this fragile beauty from waves and winds.

All the islands are united into 2 atoll chains, stretching for 120 km west to east and 920 km north to south. Some of them make groups, others are distant from the rest, and sometimes a surface of a coral reef shows up at the surface. That’s why all the calculations of the number of islands are relative, for hurricans add new islands to Maldives, and erosion takes away small pieces of paradise. Most part of the territory is uninhabited, but in savage places one can meet an aborigine drying salt fish, picking coconuts or stock up dry wood. Only 10% from 300 square km of the area are occupied by agricultural activities, and 3% are dedicated for each of pasture and tropical forests. The rest of 34% of land are covered with sugar-white beaches, the main natural treasure of Maldives.

The factor determining settlement on islands is a source of drinking water. The problem is that when it is used, earth gets some sea waters and becomes salted. Though, systems of distilling help to come over a problem of lack of drinking water. The government of Maldives cares about preservation of natural wealth by prohibiting coral fishery, turtle trapping and enclosing conservation areas. Yet, not long ago there were found oil resources in the islands, and it is not known yet what will overcome in this contest, love towards virgin nature beauty or economic benefits.
