Dhaalu (Nilandhe Atholhu Dhekunuburi) atoll

Dhaalu atoll is situated 150 km north from Male and 5 km from Faafu atoll. It is also known as Nilandhe Atholhu Dhekunuburi (Southern Nalandhe atoll). It is separated from the Northern  Nilandhe (Faafu atoll) by Dheburidheytherey Kandu channel. One can get to the airport or to other atolls by a hidroplane or by a high-speed boat.
Dhaalu map Dhaalu Atoll stretches 38 km long and 23 km wide, it unites aboout 46 islands, many of whitch are uninhabited. Hidroplane transfer takes about 40 mitutes. It’s only recently that Dhaalu atoll was open for tourists. Tourists islands are situated in the northern part of the atoll and provide wonderful possibilities for diving. The main island is Kudahuvadhoo. It is quite a large island with developped infrastructure and population of 1500 people.
Main reefs that are interesting and accessible for diving are situated along northern and north-eastern parts of the islands. There are almost no shallow reefs inside the atoll.
Lagoon, that is relatively empty from coral thicks, allows unhasting departure of an engine boat for a tour of islands. Dhaalu atoll still keeps rests of ancient temples and mosques. On the islands, inhabited by aborigines, souvenirs cost much cheaper, than in the capital.
Velavaru – this island locates a recently open tourist center and a hotel. Maldivians know this place as “Turtle Island”, for “velaa” means “turtle” on local dialect. Once there lived several species of sea turtles, some of them came to produce offspring or have some rest, others Haa Dhaalulived there permanently.
Among them there were giant sea turtles. Now their number has gradually decreased, and they became rare guests on the island. But villas still remind of these sea inhabitants with their shapes. And it is still possible to meet turtles when diving at northern part of the atoll. It is quite close to Angsana Velavaru 5* and Vilu Reef 4* hotels (nearby Meedhuffuchi island).
Vivid plants, high palm trees, sandy beaches and the most attractive lagoon make Valavaru irresistible and attractive place for searchers of untouched wild nature. Island size is about 500 to 200 meters.
The island locates Angsana Resort and Spa Maldives Velavaru hotel, open in November 2006. Meedhiffushi island stays not far from Valavaru, 128 km from Male. Hydroplane transfer takes about 35 minutes. Tourists who stayed on this island believe it to be an ideal place, surrounded with tropical gardens and light-blue ocean waters.
The island locates Vilu Reef 4* hotel, built in November 1998. Hotel territory is covered with wonderful tropical bungalows with palm-leaf covered roofs, that match greatly natural environment.
